FAO:The Desert Locust situation was calm during September

The Desert Locust situation was calm during September. Low numbers of locusts were probably present and breeding within a large area of the northern Sahel from Mauritania to western Eritrea and parts of the interior of Yemen due to good rainfall. A few small groups were seen in Sudan and Yemen. Small breeding also occurred in a few places along the Red Sea coast of Egypt and Saudi Arabia, which is rare during the summertime. The southwest monsoon withdrew in Indo-Pakistan at the end of the month and only a few locusts were seen in eastern Pakistan.
During the forecast, once summer vegetation dries out, small groups of locusts in Sudan will form and adults will move to the Red Sea coast, while others in Darfur will slowly move west. The winter breeding season will start earlier than usual but below-normal rains are expected along both sides of the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden coastal areas. Some control is expected in parts of Sudan, Yemen, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Eritrea. In the Western Region, a few small groups may occur in Chad, Niger, Mali and Mauritania. No significant developments are likely in the Eastern Region.
