Hunan Port Welcomes First Kenyan Fresh Avocado Import
On the afternoon of August 4th, a consignment of 338 kilograms of Kenyan fresh avocados was granted market clearance following a successful on-site inspection by the officers at Changsha Huanghua Airport Customs. This signifies the first-ever import of Kenyan fresh avocados in Hunan's port.
Avocados, also known as avocado pears, have become increasingly popular among domestic consumers. As the largest avocado exporter in Africa, Kenya boasts a harvest season that spans from February to November every year. This period coincides with the off-season of other major avocado-producing countries such as Mexico, Peru, and other South American countries.
An officer of Changsha Huanghua Airport Customs introduced that China has approved the imports of fresh avocados from Kenya according to a notice issued by the General Administration of Customs in June 2022. Imports are permitted with quarantine standards. This batch of avocados were directly transported from Nairobi to Changsha airport by air. This transport mode is faster and more convenient compared to that transferring to Changsha after entry at coastal ports.
Customs statistics show that Hunan's imports of African dried and fresh fruits, melons and nuts reached 38.574 million yuan in the first half of the year, increasing by 39.1 times year on year. (By Yang Yingying and Lin Jun)
